Description:

Ancient Near East, Northwestern Iran and Southeastern Turkey, Luristan, ca. 750 to 650 BCE. A forged-iron sword of intriguing form bearing a pair of recumbent lions on the shoulder. The petaloid blade bulges slightly in the midsection and features sharpened edges, a pointed tip, and a broad midrib that increased its stability. The ringed hilt increased the wielder's ability to grip it, and the discoid pommel is adorned with a pair of Janiform heads, each with 2 faces peering in opposite directions. Size: 17.9" L x 3.25" W (45.5 cm x 8.3 cm)

  • Condition: Blade shoulder reattached to bottom of handle; blade and handle are perhaps not original to one another. Professional cleaning and polishing in modern times. Retooling to finer details of Janiform heads on pommel, with pitting and oxidation commensurate with age, slight bending to blade profile, chipping to blade, and softening to finer details of recumbent lions. Great patina throughout.
