Description:

Iran, Luristan, ca. 9th-7th century BCE. This fibula (brooch) has the carving of a hand clasping the end of the pin; there are two double-headed faces on the body of the fibula and the faces are finely detailed with wide, large eyes. Luristan is in the mountainous northwest region of Iran and is famous for its bronze work. Luristan bronzes are characterized by a highly stylized take on human and animal forms, as with the faces on this fibula. Almost all of these bronzes were burial goods and came from tombs. This fibula is particularly interesting because of the double-faced form. Although in Roman culture, we know of Janus as the double-headed god, some scholars argue that the ancient Near East also had a double-faced god that pre-dated Janus. Size: 3-1/4" long, 1/4" wide, and 2-1/4" tall at its tallest point.
