Description:

Western Asia, Luristan, modern day Iran, ca. 1000 BCE. A cast copper disc-shaped roundel, cast with a low relief image of the god Sraosha grasping two flowing things - perhaps the necks of animals, as the god often is in Luristan standards - while standing and facing directly towards the viewer. Sraosha, a Zoroastrian deity, would have played a major role in Luristan religion; he is the messenger of Ahura Mazda and embodies the divine word. He if often depicted as a strong youth. This particular piece is a beautiful example of this kind of art, with very clear details, especially of the god's clothing and armor. Size: 3.7" W x 3.8" H (9.4 cm x 9.7 cm)

Provenance: private California, USA collection, purchased at Malter Galleries, California, USA, in 2001 or 2002
