Description:

Ancient Near East, northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1000 to 600 BCE. A fine example of a cast-bronze sword exhibiting an attractive style formed via the lost wax (cire perdue) technique. The broad, double-edged blade features a pair of thin fullers along the upper half that coalesce to form a single slender midrib along the lower half down to the pointed tip. The inverted parabolic hand guard has a distinctive keyhole-shaped gap in the center, and the sturdy hilt is adorned with sweeping leafy protrusions as well as faint gilded detailing. The openwork hemispherical pommel bears a wheel-and-spoke design that was perhaps thought to decrease weight and facilitate the deft movements of the warrior who wielded it. Size: 2.4" W x 21.5" H (6.1 cm x 54.6 cm)

Provenance: private California, USA collection, by descent, moved from Germany in 1997, originally collected in the 1970s in Hamburg, Germany
