Description:

Ancient Near East, Northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A substantive bronze short sword with a flanged handle, a curved pommel end, and a wide tang with a central midrib which gradually tapers to a point. The purpose of the flanged handle was to hold an inlay, presumably of either stone, wood, or ivory, in order to provide for a larger overall handle size, therefore making it easier to grasp. This sword was created by highly-trained urban artisans using the lost wax casting technique; blade cast first, handle then cast onto it. Short swords like these were not just made to be used in battle, but instead to show status in the grave or as a votive weapon to be deposited in hoards. Alluring areas of green, russet, and sapphire-blue patina envelop the surface of this exceptional example of Luristan bronze-crafting. Size: 16.875" L (42.9 cm).
