Ancient Near East, Northwestern Iran and Turkey, Luristan, ca. 1000 to 600 BCE. A fine example of a bronze short sword cast via the lost wax method with a narrow tang and squared guard with a rim, designed to have an inlaid bone or ivory panel. The double-edged blade gradually tapers to a pointed tip, and thick, mottled layers of green patina cover all surfaces of this sword and add to its beautiful form! The sword is mounted on a red felt backing within a wooden frame. Size (sword): 13.75" L x 1.125" W (34.9 cm x 2.9 cm); (frame): 18" L x 7.25" W (45.7 cm x 18.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-Stein collection, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, USA, acquired prior to 2010

  • Condition: Chips and nicks to peripheries of blade, otherwise intact and very good. Mineral and earthen deposits throughout and rich green patina. Mounted in a wooden frame via a wire filament. Red felt backing is loose from frame and needs to be reinforced before displaying this piece.
