Description:

Ancient Near East, modern day Iran, Luristan, ca. 1000 to 700 BCE. A bronze hollow tubular standard in the style of a "master of animals" - a highly stylized anthropomorphic figure standing above the heads and necks of equally stylized, giraffe-like creatures (probably meant to be deer). This example is particularly stylized - with many, it is possible to tell the species of animals, but here their heads and necks are just suggestions of zoomorphic forms. The true function of the "master of animals" in ancient Luristan is unknown. Interpretations of the Master of Animals forms have ranged from the religious - depictions of deities, idols, talismans, etc. - to the utilitarian - parts of chariots or used in funerary rituals. Size: 2.45" W x 6.3" H (6.2 cm x 16 cm)
