Description:

Ancient Near East, Northwestern Iran and Southeastern Turkey, Luristan culture, ca. 1000 to 600 BCE. A cast-bronze zoomorph of characteristically abstract form standing atop slender, delineated legs while holding its forepaws up in the air. The stance of this creature is one of a combative nature as they are typically paired with another, similar creature with a slender standard tube between them. The head is raised atop a lengthy neck and features a thick snout, bared fangs and tongue, and a rounded pate with ovoid eyes and petite ears. Layers of green and brown patina have formed across the composition throughout the millennia. Size: 0.75" W x 4.9" H (1.9 cm x 12.4 cm); 5.9" H (15 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000
