Ancient Near East, Northwestern Iran / Turkey, Luristan, late Bronze to early Iron Age, ca. 2000 to 1000 BCE; Central Asia, India, Bactrian / Kushan Empire. 200 BCE to 300 CE. A heavy cast bronze votive mace head from the famous bronze-makers of ancient Luristan, and an iron axe head from Central Asia. The mace was made via the lost wax method with a bulbous head and a hafting hole from the neck through the head, with lightly incised motifs around the neck. The iron axe has an unusual, notched blade with a cylindrical socketing hole and a short spike on the butt. Size of axe: 6.25" L x 5.5" W (15.9 cm x 14 cm)

Provenance: private Everett, Massachusetts, USA collection; axe acquired from Palmyra Heritage Gallery, New York, USA, October 10th, 2021, lot # 0166; mace acquired from Artemis Gallery, September 25th, 2020, lot # 47; ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan USA acquired before 2000.

  • Condition: Heavy patina and oxidation on both. Mace head has abrasions and chips, and the iron axe has pitting and losses to surface layers, but otherwise intact.
