Ancient Near East, Luristan, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. This is a bronze dagger with a flanged hilt, cast in two pieces using the lost wax casting process. The handle would at one time have had a grip made of wood, stone, or bone, attached by the three pins whose perforations are clearly visible here. The blade itself is long and narrow, with no shoulder and a broad, low midrib, tapering to a sharp point. Size: 1.3" W x 18.1" H (3.3 cm x 46 cm); height on stand: 19.05" (48.4 cm).
The area around the Caspian Sea, particularly on its southeast coast, and into modern day Iran, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, and Baluchistan (western Pakistan), was a cultural hotbed during this time period. The map of archaeological finds from there is studded with urban centers, large burial mounds, and technological and metallurgical innovation - especially in the production of amazing bronze artifacts, particularly those made by the artisans of Luristan (modern day northwestern Iran). People - both men and women - went to their graves with beautiful, well-made weapons like this one as a sign of high status.

- Condition: One side of flanged hilt has losses to both edges of flange; the other has loss to one edge. Blade edge has tiny losses. Lovely light green patina and encrustation on surface.
