Description:

Ancient Near East, modern day northern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1000 to 600 BCE. A heavy bronzework in the form of a cylinder with two anthropomorphic faces presenting bulging round eyes, a pronounced hooked nose, a slight smile, pointed chin, and protruding ears - all capped by a high headdress with incised fret marks adorning the finial. These may be a depiction of the skull-like head of Pazuzu (Fazuzu or Pazuza) from Assyrian and Babylonian mythology. Pazuzu was the king of the demons of the wind, and represented the southwestern wind, the bearer of storms, drought, famine, and locusts. A very special piece most likely made as a votive object to be carried by an individual. Size: 4.125" H (10.5 cm); 4.875" H (12.4 cm) on included custom stand.
