Ancient Near East, Luristan, ca. 1500 to 1000 BCE. A striking pair of axe heads: one larger, cast from copper and the other made from bronze. Both present long, bearded blades that slant slightly downwards from tubular sockets, ending at curved edges. A raised periphery lines the top of both weapons, while the more petite weapon features a perforation near the bottom of its socket for attachment. The region of Luristan, which encompasses the rugged Zagros Mountain chain, is famous for its bronze work that was above and beyond the skill level of contemporary groups. The affluent group in Luristan society that patronized the metalworking industry and purchased fine items like this sword were nomadic horsemen. They would travel into towns and purchase swords and other bronze and iron objects from craftsmen there. Size of larger (one with greener patina): 3.9" L x 1.2" W x 2.7" H (9.9 cm x 3 cm x 6.9 cm)
Although these horsemen were pre-literate, we know from the records of the Elamites and other southern neighbors that these tribesmen functioned as mercenaries in the constant warfare between the Sumerians, Babylonians, Assyrians, and Elamites. When they died, they were buried in rock-covered tombs with their weapons.

- Condition: More petite axe head has some minor chipping to bottom edge of hafting socket. Both have expected surface wear and softening to blade as shown, but are otherwise intact and in great condition with rich patina throughout.
