Description:

Ancient Near East, Northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A cast-bronze bracelet featuring a stylized leonine head as each terminal. The lion heads have huge manes, snarling faces, and wide eyes. In this culture, a relatively wealthy class of nomadic horse lords and ladies commissioned bronze items from artisans in urban centers. Many of these exquisitely made items ultimately came to grace the graves of elite warriors. Size: 3" W (7.6 cm)

This piece is stunning and could be made wearable with a cord or chain. Pendants like this one were made to be worn around the neck as a type of amulet or sewn onto clothing and were frequently made of melted down coinage traded north from the Mediterranean.

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010
