Description:

Ancient Near East, Northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A superb cast-bronze axe head with short spikes, a hafting socket, and a narrow blade. The cylindrical shaft has four ribs with knob-headed spikes extending from the back. The blade has a rectangular protrusion on the top, just after the hafting opening. The blade is cylindrical, then flattens and widens at the flared cutting edge. The surface of the blade is further adorned with incised geometric motifs, and a wonderful green patina has developed upon the surface over the ages! This handsome axe was likely made for ritualistic use and cast utilizing the lost wax technique, a method of armament creation used by ancient Luristan blacksmiths. Size: 6.25" L x 1.675" W x 2" H (15.9 cm x 4.3 cm x 5.1 cm); 6.75" H (17.1 cm) on included custom stand.
