Description:

Central Asia, northwestern Iran, Luristan culture, end of 2nd beginning of the first millennium BCE. Bronze battle axe head in cast bronze. Oval socket with small spike to one end, long sweeping blade emerging from the other. Interestingly, blade has a long thin triangular groove leading from attachment socket toward the blade. This is the first example where we have seen such a design, probably allowing for greater strength with less weight. Size: 6.5" L (16.5 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Estate of Julian Hovsepian, New york, acquired before 1980
