Description:

Luis Jimenez (Mexican American, 1940-2006). "Black Jack in the Pasture" color lithograph, 2008. Printer's Proof. Signed with blind stamp at lower right beneath image. Title at lower center. "P.P." at lower left. Published by Segura Publishing Company, Tempe, Arizona, USA. A remarkable color printer's proof by Mexican American artist Luis Jimenez depicting a portrait of his horse Black Jack, a blue roan Appaloosa, standing at a forty-five degree angle to the groundline with his hindquarters toward the viewer and his head facing away. Printed posthumously, the sizable lithograph renders the horse in hues of black and navy, hooves solidly planted on a mocha brown ground, all nicely complemented by an orange background and portrayed in loose, energetic lines, open cross-hatching, and bold strokes. Black Jack was famously Jimenez's inspiration for one of his most well-known works: "Blue Mustang" at the Denver International Airport. Size of lithograph: 25" W x 19" H (63.5 cm x 48.3 cm); of paper: 30" W x 22.25" H (76.2 cm x 56.5 cm)

Luis Jimenez (1940–2006) was an influential Mexican American artist and sculptor known for his vibrant and dynamic fiberglass sculptures that celebrate and critique the cultural and social landscapes of the American Southwest. Born in El Paso, Texas, Jimenez drew inspiration from his Mexican heritage, the Chicano experience, and the traditions of folk art and muralism. His work often fused elements of pop culture, mythology, and political commentary, challenging viewers with its bold colors and provocative themes. Among his most famous works is Vaquero, a towering depiction of a Mexican cowboy that reflects both pride and complexity in cultural identity. Jimenez's art not only honored the struggles and contributions of marginalized communities but also served as a sharp critique of social inequalities, leaving a lasting legacy in public art and contemporary sculpture.
