South America, Peru, Upper/Western Amazon Basin, Ucayali River, Shipibo peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-built pottery bowl of a broad form with a squat, acorn-shaped body, a carinated midsection leading up to a sloped shoulder, and a thin rim surrounding the cavernous basin. The exterior features fine linear and geometric motifs presented in red and black hues atop a cream ground, and the foot bears large zigzags and diamond forms in black. The interior basin surfaces are decorated with a uniform layer of chocolate brown pigment, and the rim is outlined in black. Size: 9.5" W x 4.875" H (24.1 cm x 12.4 cm)
