Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. An impressive mold-made pottery oil lamp presenting a discoid body, a slightly recessed tondo, and a wick spout, all sitting upon a flat, annular base. The central tondo features the relief image of a man riding a galloping horse. He looks back over his shoulder with his robes and cloak trailing behind him. In one hand is a rod or staff with a basket at the tip. The other hand is held up in an open palm gesture. To the right is a relief Latin legend, and below a small fill hole. Two scrolling volutes frame the neck of the spout which contains the opening for the wick. Size: 5" L x 3.675" W x 1.125" H (12.7 cm x 9.3 cm x 2.9 cm)
