Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A lovely cast-bronze pail of a small form with a circular foot protruding from the base of the rounded body. The vessel has a thin rim which is rounded around small wooden fragments, and a twisting handle is secured within small loops with curved balustrade-style terminals. Dozens of shallow ribs are pattern-molded on the side of the vessel, and thick layers of green and brown patina envelop both the body and handle. Size (w/ handle down): 4.5" W x 2.4" H (11.4 cm x 6.1 cm).

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private H.G. collection, Rhineland-Palatinate, acquired between 1970 and 1999

  • Condition: Losses to rim of foot and one suspension loop along rim. Slight bending to overall form of rim, body, and handle, with light encrustations along interior and exterior, and softening to some molded ribs. Nice earthen deposits as well as wonderful green and brown patina throughout. Old inventory label beneath foot.
