Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Ecuador, Jama Coaque, ca. 300 to 500 CE. A mold-made terracotta maskette depicting a simian/monkey-like visage with an expressive countenance. The mask has open eyes set within concave circular surrounds, a protruding nose with flaring nostrils, wide toothy grin, perky ears, a cleft chin, and overall deep grooves to project a certain vitality and dynamic volumes. Evidence of white and perhaps red pigment present over eyes, cheeks, and lips. Three holes at the top of the forehead and temples suggest that the mask was suspended or attached to a wearer. Such maskettes along with ceramic vessels representing human or animal effigies, as well as stone or ceramic sculptures are thought to signify ritual practices and complex religious beliefs among the indigenous peoples of Ecuador. Size: 4.75" W x 3.25" H (12.1 cm x 8.3 cm)

Provenance: Ex- Peter Arnovick collection, Los Altos, CA.
