Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 200 to 400 CE. A large and vibrant vessel, hand-built from pottery, with a round but stable base and an inverted bell-shaped body. The entire vessel is painted with a matte orange pigment, and the undecorated interior boasts a highly-burnished surface. The exterior is decorated with an upper register containing sixteen white-filled panels of abstract zoomorphic creatures, and a lower register with eight highly-stylized fish. Seven of the fish are oriented horizontally, and one smaller, vertically-oriented fish hints that the artist ran out of space when painting the aquatic imagery. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 5.75" W x 4.25" H (14.6 cm x 10.8 cm).

Provenance: ex-private Los Angeles, California, USA collection, acquired about 1974
