Description:

East Africa, Madagascar, Jurassic to Cretaceous period, ca. 200 to 66 million years ago. A fossilized ammonite that is fully excavated from the sediment with a lovely ammonitic suture patterning in hues of umber and amber. Sutures are usually hidden by the material of the external shell wall, but here the wavy formations are on full display, the fractal patterning or suture marks are an aesthetically pleasing natural part of ammonite anatomy and their shapes can help determine species and even time period of existence! During preparation of this fossil, the preparer took the time to carve around the sutures on the chamber aperture to create an interesting profile, and the surface is highly polished and smooth Size: 6" W x 5" H (15.2 cm x 12.7 cm); 5.25" H (13.3 cm) on included custom stand.
