Description:

Classical World, Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 360 to 325 BCE, probably 360 to 350. A very large pottery situla (fancy term for a bucket), a twin-handled vessel made for carrying wine. This one stands on a low, flanged base and has a slight rolled rim. Flat handles, placed flat just under the rim, where a wire bale would have been attached aid in lifting it for transport! Painted on its body is a series of elaborate grape motifs below the rim. Beneath them are grape-on-vine tendrils and, in the center, a scene with Minerva looking forward with geese looking away toward an obelisk to each side. Size: 12.25" W x 8.25" H (31.1 cm x 21 cm)

Apulian vase painters created a this style, Gnathian ware, where the entire vessel was glazed black, then painted on in red, creamy white, and orange/yellow in a style similar to the red-figure style. This was perfected in the town of Gnathia (present-day Egnazia), on the Adriatic coast in Apulia. The black glaze is probably designed to look like bronze.
