Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A very large redware pottery vessel depicting four gourds, its globular body magnificently modeled with these organic squashes, each with horizontal ribs and nubby stems, the entire vessel standing on a rounded base, with a flared rim. All slipped with a saturated red vermillion slip that was beautifully burnished and shows wonderful root marks and mineral deposits. This vessel is a classic case of art imitating life, as the indigenous of Mexico used hollowed gourds for storing and serving food and drink. Size: 9.75" in diameter x 7.125" H (24.8 cm x 18.1 cm)
