Description:

Ancient Greece, Classical period, ca. 400 BCE. A wonderful pottery askos (vessel used to store perfumed oils) with a narrow opening and subtly flared rim, the neck and body depicting a Siren, her beautiful visage facing front and finely delineated with lovely feminine features including slightly parted lips, suggesting that she is in the midst of singing her dangerously enchanting melody intended to lure nearby sailors to shipwreck on the rocky coast of her island. The handle of the vessel also cleverly depicts her tail wings. A magical rendering of this mythical winged maiden who legendary lured mariners to their death. Size: 4.5" L x 3.125" H (11.4 cm x 7.9 cm)
