Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Greece, probably Tanagra, Boeotia, Hellenistic period, ca. late 4th to 3rd century BCE. A head from the naturalistic tradition of sculpture for which Tanagra is best known. The majority of these figures depict fashionable women, as shown here -a head with a sensitive face and an elaborate coiffure. Figures like this one represented a break in tradition from earlier smaller statuary, which had had a religious function - these instead present a world of mortal women, perhaps originating from the New Comedy of Menander. Size: 1.25" W x 1.5" H (3.2 cm x 3.8 cm); 3.15" H (8 cm) on included custom stand.
