Description:

Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. 2nd century BCE. A beautiful hollow pottery votive figure of the goddess Aphrodite. She is posed sensually, mostly nude with her chiton draped around her lower legs and one arm, highlighting the curves of her body. She wears a large, shell-shaped headdress, earrings, necklace, and multiple bracelets and leglets. She leads against a column and holds a flower in one hand. Comes with custom stand. Size: 4.4" W x 12.6" H (11.2 cm x 32 cm)

The Egyptian influence on the artwork is clear. A figure like this is votive, made to be an offering at a temple or perhaps at a personal shrine or small altar in the home. Aphrodite, the goddess of love, beauty, and pleasure was a powerful figure in the Greek pantheon, with cults throughout the Greek world.
