Description:

Greece, Athens, ca. 400 BCE. A fine black-glazed pottery pouring vessel known as an epichysis with a characteristically spool-shaped lower body with a wide, bell-shaped shoulder. A pinched spout adorned with a pair of circular lateral roundels projects from the top of a tapering conical neck, and a high-arching strap handle joins the spout to the upper body. The domed shoulder is decorated with five petite palmettes joined with a thinly-incised curvilinear band. A fabulous example exhibiting scattered areas of faint silvery iridescence. Size: 3.7" W x 4.25" H (9.4 cm x 10.8 cm).
