Description:

Pakistan and Afghanistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 1st century CE. Although this piece is a fragment, what remains is in fine condition, carved grey schist showing a Buddha figure with his hands pressed together in the sign of "Namaste". He has a large ushnisha and behind him is what appears to be a spray of feathers. Gandharan art was a huge hit with the British colonizers in India, and many pieces that we see today were removed from Gandharan archaeological sites by the British; it is difficult to tell what this full image would have been! Size: 4.4" W x 5" H (11.2 cm x 12.7 cm)
