Description:

Italy, Apulia/Daunian, ca. 300 BCE. A skillfully wheel-thrown, polychrome pottery plate with a relatively high foot and graceful, convex rim. While usually a simple form, this particular plate was modeled with the utmost care. Close examination reveals a great variety of contours as well as a beautifully decorated surface with circular bands of black and red hues on both the tondo and underside of the base. The piece is immediately recognizable as Daunian for its coloration and simple yet elegant shape. Items like these were exported out of Apulia and were popular throughout the ancient eastern Mediterranean. A lovely example with two perforations for suspension. Size: 9" in diameter x 1.375" H (22.9 cm x 3.5 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Private LA County collection
