Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A lovely jar of a round-bottomed form with curving walls, a short neck, and elaborate curvilinear and barbed motifs in black, red, and purple pigment atop the cream-hued ground. A pair of large black circles along the top of the shoulder represent the flared nostrils of a mythical beast with a huge chevron-shaped mouth, large ovoid eyes formed from spiraling bands, and a brow lined with jet-black barbs. The mythical animal shown here would have been of shamanic or spiritual importance, and the use of the purple pigment suggests this vessel is of the Conte/Macaracas artistic style. Size: 6.2" W x 4.75" H (15.7 cm x 12.1 cm).
