Byzantine Empire, Greece or Turkey, ca. 5th to 10th century CE. Lovely gold earrings in an openwork design with central "Greek" cross in center of each surrounded by floral decoration, three chains hang from each with central chain holding a bird carved from stone, outer two chains with polished stone beads. Closure is hinged rounded wire that was wrapped around clasp. Total weight of the pair is 15.4 grams, gold tests at pure 24 karats. Size: 2.75" L x 1.25" W (7 cm x 3.2 cm)
