Description:

Magna Graecia, South Italy, Apulian, ca. 4th century BCE. A fine ceramic kylix form comprised of a wide shallow bowl on a raised foot and twin upraised handles, the interior bowl adorned with a nude young athlete running or walking in composite profile toward the right, carrying what may be interpreted as a torch or perhaps a drinking horn, his body flanked by two round objects (perhaps discuses or balls) with an ovoid object (perhaps a shield) between his legs. Surrounding the figure and adorning the inner rim is a sinuous ivy vine pattern. The figure and accompanying objects also show remains of added/fugitive white pigment, as well as black dotted details. On the exterior walls is a beautiful laurel wreath pattern, and a circle motif marks the underside of the concave base. A fabulous example of this ancient vessel probably used for drinking wine, perfect for all you oenophiles and/or sports fans out there! Size: 9.25" W handlespan x 2.5" H (23.5 cm x 6.4 cm)

Athletics formed a significant component of ancient Greek life from the founding of the Olympic Games in 776 BCE until the end of the fourth century CE when pagan festivals and games were outlawed. The development of red-figure vase painting in the late sixth century BCE gave artists wonderful freedom of expression by allowing them to draw or paint, rather than incise, the details of their figures. As one could imagine, painted lines were more fluid, allowing for a better representation of bodies in motion. In addition, the thickness of a line could be modulated, allowing the artist to accentuate certain details more than others.
