Description:

Prehistoric, ca. 240 to 65 million years ago. A large, polished ammonite of a characteristically coiled form with impressively articulated suture (growth lines) - the patterns so intricate and complex. The colors of this specimen range from honey ambers to browns verging on black as well as creamy whites. Both sides of this ammonite are positively brilliant, equally worthy of display. A breathtaking example demonstrating the impeccable beauty made possible by natural history, in full 3-dimensional form, exceptional for showing a striking form, heavenly hues, and intricate patterns on the polished surface. This ammonite would make the perfect addition to any fossil marine life collection! Size: 6" W x 5" H (15.2 cm x 12.7 cm)

The term ammonite was derived from the Egyptian god called Ammon (Amun) who is generally depicted with ram's horns behind each of his ears. The ancient Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder, author of the encyclopedic tome Naturalis Historia, originally dubbed these fossils ammonis cornua (horns of Ammon). Ammonites like most cephalopods were carnivorous prehistoric creatures with sharp jaws within a ring of tentacles that extended from their shells to capture prey. As they grew, ammonites constantly built their shells, only living in the outermost chamber.
