Rookwood Pottery Vase by Louise Abel (German-American, 1894-1959) dated 1927. Signed, numbered, and dated on base. A striking and quite sizable matte-finished ceramic vase with 5 raised sections on the body, each decorated with a slip painted floral motif of magenta blossoms and emerald green leaves amidst mottled green hues. The vessel is marked on the base with the Rookwood logo (a back-to-back "R" and "P" surrounded by flames), "XXVII" to indicate the date 1927, identifying shape number "2930", and an encircled "A" (Louise Abel) artist's mark. The Rookwood Pottery Company was founded in 1880 by the artist Maria Longworth-Nichols who created a world-renowned ceramic studio in Cincinnati, Ohio that attracted many reputable artists and ceramicists from both the United States and Europe. Louise Abel was born in Widdern Wurttemburg, Germany and came to the U.S. with her parents in 1909. Louise studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy, the Art Students League in New York, The Louis Tiffany Foundation, The Barnes Foundation in Merion, Pennsylvania, The Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, The Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, and the University of Cincinnati College of Liberal Arts. Louse began working for Rookwood in 1919 when she was 25 years old and continued working for Rookwood until 1932.
