Description:

Northern Europe, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A wonderful pair of forged-iron spear heads with sharpened blades and cylindrical socketing shafts. The first head is made from carbon steel and features a petaloid blade with a prominent midrib, sharpened edges, and a pointed tip. The largest iron head exhibits a lengthy, slender blade that would have been optimal for thrusting strikes. Both items are enveloped in lustrous patina. Size of largest (slender blade): 12.1" L x 0.7" W (30.7 cm x 1.8 cm); (triangular blade): 9.2" L x 1.7" W (23.4 cm x 4.3 cm)

  • Condition: Spear head with triangular blade has small losses to lower area of socketing shaft as shown; largest spear head is intact and very good. Both items have minor encrustations and abrasions, with pitting in some areas. Great patina throughout.
