Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th century CE. A fine set of two rectangular copper panels with elaborate mythological iconography brought forth in repousse. The shorter panel depicts Rama (also Ramachandra), the seventh avatar of Vishnu and one of the most virtuous heroes in both Hinduism and Tibetan Buddhism. He stands beneath an elaborate archway and holds several attributes including a spear, a sword, and a bow. The taller panel depicts Bhairava (also known as Mahakala Bhairava or Kala Bhairava in Hindu), a wrathful form of the Hindu god Shiva who protects his devotees from their enemies. Bhairava presents beneath a flaming archway, holds a skeleton and a scepter in his hands, and stands atop a horned creature surmounting a defeated foe.   • Condition: Both panels have slight bending to overall forms, with minor nicks to corners of Rama panel, and light softening to some repousse details. Nice remaining iconography and great patina throughout.
