Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A wonderful gathering of eight cast-bronze brooches as well as a cast-iron fire starter and flint striker. Two fibulae take on a crossbow-form design, three have a T-shaped body with coiled lateral arms, and two have elegantly curved designs with ridge-adorned bodies. One brooch has an S-shaped body with small cresting waves within the curves. A thick cast-iron fire starter has a wide body with curl-tipped terminals, and a piece of beige-hued flint creates the sparks when struck. Size of largest (T-shaped fibula): 1.875" W x 3.25" H (4.8 cm x 8.3 cm).

Provenance: private Long Island, New York collection, collected prior to 2000

  • Condition: All fibulas have slight bending to overall form, with some having lost their original pin, and others with losses to areas of arms or bodies. Iron fire starter has slight bending and light oxidation, and flint striker has small chips to peripheries. Light earthen deposits and fine patina throughout.
