Description:

Central Asia, Nepal, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A fine group of hand-carved wooden butter churn handles known as "ghurra" or "neti." Each churning handle consists of a thick body decorated with carved motifs, a large pierced ring, and a smaller attachment hole on the opposite end. A churning rod would have been inserted through the ring when the piece was still functional. Among the Ghurung and Magar peoples of western Nepal, butter churns are traditional gifts indicating interest in marriage between families. Size of largest: 3.8" W x 14.125" H (9.7 cm x 35.9 cm).
