Description:

Ancient Near East, Sumer, ca. 3rd to 2nd millennium BCE. A lovely gathering of six hand-carved stone artifacts from ancient Sumer. First is a petite turtle amulet with short legs and an incised shell, and second is a standalone head with an elongated chin, a drilled cavity through the neck, and bulging ovoid eyes. Included are four cylindrical seals with incised imagery, the smallest carved from rock crystal and displaying a pair of flying cranes; the second with five standing figures; the third with one standing man, one seated man, and a recumbent bull; and the largest shows a man fighting a griffin beneath a winged circular symbol. Size of largest (griffin seal): 0.6" W x 1.2" H (1.5 cm x 3 cm).
