Description:

Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 4th century BCE. A lovely ensemble of miniature wheel-thrown pottery votive offering dishes in a variety of compositions. Two shallow bowls each have a small footed base, with one narrow and one wide in composition. Two footed plates have rolled rims, one with a flat surface and the other with a raised dot-and-circle design. A petite jarlet has a spool-form body and a flared rim; and a diminutive cup has a thin foot, wide rim, and an applied loop handle. Each vessel has a glossy black coating as well as areas of reflective silvery iridescence, and all are attractive examples of Apulian-era blackware! Size of largest (handled cup): 2.45" W (6.2 cm).

Provenance: private Carlton collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired between 1965 and 1980
