Description:

China, Ming Dynasty, 1368 to 1644 CE. This is a fine collection of hollow pottery tomb attendants in excellent shape, with bright pigment and clear styles. Together, they form a group of musicians. All are doing something different, holding cymbals or playing a long wind instrument or ringing a bell; they wear matching costumes of heavy green glaze (their instruments are glazed yellow) and have largely unpainted faces and tall pointed hats. Hundreds of pottery figures like these were placed into tombs during the Ming period. These objects appeal to us because they are a window to the past, showing us the clothing styles and artistic activities of the past. Size: 2.5" W x 7.75" H (6.4 cm x 19.7 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Rosensteel collection
