Ancient West Mexico, Chupicuaro, Michoacan, and Colima, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A set of 5 hand-built pottery figures from ancient West Mexico. First is a standing Michoacan female figure with red pigment on her forearms and ear spools. Next are 2 Chupicuaro "pretty lady" figures, each nude and holding arms over their abdomens. Fourth is a standing Colima male figure with a conical helmet and a thick waistband, and the larger Colima female figure stands nude with outstretched arms. Size of largest (Colima female): 0.69" L x 3.375" W x 5.875" H (1.8 cm x 8.6 cm x 14.9 cm)

Provenance: private Ferndale, Michigan, USA collection; ex-private Detroit, Michigan, USA collection, acquired prior to 2004

  • Condition: Restoration to proper right arm of Colima male, proper left arm of Colima female; repairs to head and proper right leg of Michoacan figure. Both Chupicuaro figures are intact. Loss to back of Colima male's waistband as well as top of head of Michoacan figure. Nice preservation to overall forms.
