Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A fine gathering of 5 mold-formed pottery oil lamps in a variety of forms. One lamp has a ring of stippling around the tondo. Another lamp features similar stippling but with an abstract zoomorphic face protruding from atop the handle. A third lamp features faint grape bunches around the tondo, and a fourth lamp of a pale beige hue has ivy vines and leaves along the shoulder. The largest lamp exhibits a dark brown color as well as a broad-petaled flower within the deeply recessed tondo. Size of largest (dark brown): 3.7" L x 2.6" W (9.4 cm x 6.6 cm)

  • Condition: Largest lamp has a chip along one section of the recessed tondo as shown; remaining 4 lamps are intact and very good. All lamps have abrasions and encrustations, with nicks to bases, peripheries, and spouts, and with char marks to tips of some wick spouts. Nice earthen deposits and preservation to decorations throughout.
