Description:

Native American, Ohio River Valley and surrounding region, Adena culture, ca. 1000 BCE. A complementary collection of five large, knapped chert blades from this culture, all but one in the characteristic "leaf" shape with one end tapering to a point and the other to a gently rounded base. The fifth has points at either end. The Adena, precursors to the Hopewell people, built large mounds throughout the Ohio River Valley, and used blades like these for hunting, trading, and ceremonies; they have been found in caches in bogs, perhaps deposited as religious offerings. Size of largest: 2.95" W x 15.4" H (7.5 cm x 39.1 cm)

Provenance: private southwestern Pennsylvania, USA collection, acquired prior to 2000
