Description:

Southern Europe, Hallstatt culture, ca. 7th century BCE. Five nearly identical examples of the spectacle, or double spiral, fibula (brooch). Each is created from a single bronze wire twisted around itself. The design of these items was remarkably persistent over time, and the style dates back to the 13th century BCE. They were often buried with their owners. Size of largest: 1.55" W x 3.9" H (3.9 cm x 9.9 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection, purchased prior to 2003

  • Condition: Two pins are included which are detached from the brooches. None of the brooches has an intact pin and clasp, though four have some remains. The two smaller have some minor losses and one has a repaired break. Of the three larger, one has a loss from a lower corner and the other two are in nice condition aside from the loss of their pins. Great patina and overall nice preservation of form on all.
