Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manteno, ca. 800 to 1500 CE. A lovely set of five hand-built terracotta spindle whorls, vertically drilled for suspension, and each displaying a graceful preening pelican around the exterior register. The pelican is a highly-symbolic animal in ancient Pre-Columbian mythos, supposedly able to roam through multiple planes of existence like the cloudy heavens, rugged earthen purgatory, and the watery depths of the underworld. Finely-executed and skillfully-detailed, these are five superb miniature spindle whorls! Size of largest (all fairly similar in size): 0.5" W (1.3 cm).
