East Asia, Japan, late Meiji ca. early 20th century CE. Five erotic paintings from an album of shunga inspired paintings, each on handmade paper depicting a world of explicitly erotic and fantastical sexual possibilities. Shunga, produced between the 16th century and the 19th century by Ukiyo-e ("floating world") artists, has its origins in ancient China and is a Japanese term for erotic art. The literal translation of the Japanese word shunga means picture of spring; "spring" is a common euphemism for sex. Size: paintings measure ~ 5.375" L x 4.375" W (13.7 cm x 11.1 cm); sheets measure 7.125" L x 6.125" W (18.1 cm x 15.6 cm)
