Description:

West Africa, Ghana, Ashanti culture, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A wonderful collection of 40 cast-brass weights used for measuring and weighing gold. The weights are a variety of shapes, and most have flat profiles with raised or incised designs. Many are circular with overlapping discs or half discs with spiraling motifs. Several are rectangular with raised linear motifs, and a few are trapezoidal shaped with leaf-like veins. Three have loops or perforations, perhaps for suspension. The weights range from 3.8 grams to 24.1 grams. Size of largest: 1.75" L x 1" W (4.4 cm x 2.5 cm)
