Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A collection of four lovely glass vessels with a variety of shapes. The first and tallest is an unguentarium with an aqua hue, a teardrop shaped body, and a long neck with a flat rim. The next is a dainty pearlescent jar with ribbed body and a slightly flared neck. The next has a squat rounded body, a tall neck, and out folded rim, and the glass is a light aqua hue. The last has a cylindrical body with small ribs, a corseted neck, and a wide funnel-shaped rim. Glass in the ancient world was highly valued for its transparent properties, and was popular among the Roman elite who could afford these luxurious items. Size of largest (unguentarium): 1.8" W x 5.5" H (4.6 cm x 14 cm)

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid 1980s

  • Condition: Three vessels repaired from multiple pieces, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines; smaller ribbed vessel is intact and very good. All pieces have weathering film, with micro-bubbling within glass matrices of some vessels, and light encrustations on others. Beautiful iridescence throughout.
